This role is based in Farnborough, Hampshire UK at Sondex Wireline Ltd., a business within the Wireline Services division of Baker Hughes Oil Field Services and Equipment. The company designs and manufactures a diverse range of electromechanical instruments (Wireline Downhole tools) that operate in deep oil & gas wells under extremely harsh environments.

This is an exciting role for a highly skilled machinist.  Working in our prototype manufacturing facility – part of the Technology development department – this role is critical to minimizing the time-to-market for our new products. You will produce complex machined precision components needed to build the first prototype of our new products and the jigs and test fixtures needed to qualify them.

You will use your experience and skill to manufacture the components, which often have complex forms and features, tight tolerance and are made in a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic materials, including some that present a significant machining challenge. As a member of the product development team, you will also provide advice, guidance and feedback to the design team on the practicality / ease of manufacture of the new designs.

Day-to-day duties will include:

  • Review drawings of new components and identify the machining processes required to make them, achieve the required quality standards.

  • Setting up and operating special purpose equipment, conventional lathes and milling machines and numerical control (NC) machines.

  • Starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions and /or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machine controls as required.

  • Maintaining a tidy and organised workplace.

  • Assembly, fitting and other general fabrication of items needed for product development work, such as test jigs and fixtures.

  • When necessary, performing preventative and predictive maintenance on machinery.

To be successful in applying for this role, you will:

  • Be an indentured & time-served apprentice with a minimum ONC mechanical engineering.

  • Have a minimum of five years’ experience gained in precision machining and be familiar with programming and operation of CNC machines.

  • Be able to read engineering drawings and 3D CAD models in both metric and imperial units.

  • Be able to demonstrate skills on at least two of the following machine tools: CNC mill, manual mill, CNC lathe, manual lathe.

  • Be able to align / secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.

  • Have a working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD & T).

  • Be able to calculate / set controls to regulate machining parameters, i.e. speeds, feeds, coolant flow, depths and angle of cuts.

  • Be able to demonstrate adherence to world-class health and safety practices and standards.

  • Have basic computer literacy.

  • Be adaptable.

In addition, experience in the following areas would be a distinct advantage:

  • Experience with HURCO and XYZ machine tools

  • Experience of machining high temperature alloys such as Inconel 718, stainless steel grade 17/4 ph, Copper beryllium alloy 25.
